Medium: Oil paint and pastels
I have been painting full time since March 2012. Not long I know, but something that has been brewing for some 12 years. In 2000 I took a semester long drawing class on Wednesday evenings at the Canberra Institute of Technology. I had always loved drawing and took this class to feed my creative side after having kept it on the back burner for many years while fulfilling career responsibilities. I rediscovered the satisfaction and joy of being absorbed in the act of drawing, of learning to see and express myself artistically by rousing latent abilities and using a medium that I loved. For 3 hours in the middle of a demanding week nothing else mattered and it was good.
From there I began drawing for leisure and worked my way through the text and exercises in “The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards. I discovered pastels, painted some family portraits that were well received, eventually painting commissions in oils for friends and friends of friends. Throughout this time I also painted a lot of half finished paintings, devoured books on art, art history, techniques of painters and undertook workshops with a range of local and nationally respected artists, including a two week long workshop in 2012 with Max Wilks at the University of Southern Queensland Summer School in Toowoomba, Queensland.
