Murrumbateman resident Wendy Teakel has won the $35,000 Country Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting with her artwork ‘Black Soil Country’. Now in its eighth year, the award showcases the wealth of artistic talent across country and coastal New South Wales while contributing to the visual arts industry.

In commenting on the art prize the artist stated: “This is a very important art prize as it draws the gaze of the art world away from the main cities and coastal fringes and focuses on rural Australia . . . The Country Energy Prize provides an occasion for a focus on art which is from and about the land. It provides an opportunity for the artists who live in the bush to showcase work which span the depth and breadth of issues faced in country life”.

Also selected as a finalist in the Country Energy Art Prize was Yass Valley artist Kim Nelson with his signature piece ‘The Red Shawl’. Kim was also selected for the Black Swan and Shirley Hannan art awards this year.
