On Sunday August 28, five Yass Music Club scholars presented a wonderful program of music to a very well-attended concert in St Clements Church under the guidance of their mentor from the Yass Music Club, Ros Whiteley. Among the musicians was Craig Wilkinson, Rowan Phemister, Tom Pinson & Ben Stevens.
The purpose of the scholarships is to assist young people from Yass and district in their musical development. The scholarship money is used to assist with music tuition, maintenance of instruments, the purchase of music, and attendance at music schools in their particular instruments

It’s happening again for the second year running and this year it’s even bigger, featuring the internationally renown to the not so internationally renown! The YASSarts Arts Trail will run over the 6 – 7 of November and is part of the overall CLASSIC YASS weekend which also includes the Celebration of Heritage Motoring and a feast of Open Gardens. YASSarts co-ordinator Kim Nelson instigated the concept of the three events combining and confesses he is a little worried about the monster it has become.

Following sell out performances at the 2010 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Emo Parsonson brings his show ‘Capital Punishment’ to Yass as part of the YASSarts Arts Trail. He will be joined for this show by Dayne Rathbone, Daniel Connell and Rafe Morris – all regional comedians. This will be the first gig since Melbourne for the ‘Capital Punishment’ boys. Renown harpist Alice Giles will perform an exciting collaborative concert with the Indian classical dancer Padma Menon at the Oddfellows’ Hall in Yass this coming November as part of the YASSarts Arts Trail. The concert is entitled ‘Sangam’ which means confluence, and the two artists have prepared a program which finds a meeting place between our two cultures and disciplines. The next performance by the Yass Repertory Society begins on 27th August and is a performance of J.M. Barrie’s “The Admirable Crichton” directed by Winston Williams.

An early notice just to prepare you all for the YASSarts ‘Arts Trail’ which will be running again this coming November, featuring exhibitions, artist open studios, music, poetry, comedy & dance. The Arts Trail will be part of a larger celebration of community entitled Classic Yass.

Internationally renown harpist and Yass Valley resident Alice Giles has informed YASSarts that her ‘Seven Harp Ensemble’ (SHE) are about to release a new CD on the Tall Poppies label. To launch this, SHE are embarking on an eight concert tour from Kangaroo Valley to Armidale. The tour starts in Gunning on Saturday 17th April. For further details click here.
