ARCHIE WINS ‘YOUNG ARCHIE’

Published by under Exhibitions

Ten-year-old Archibald Hyles, named among the first winners of the newly created Young Archibald prize, revealed his artist mother named him on a hunch he might one day win the famous portrait competition. “She’s a good fortune teller,” smiled the blond-haired farmer’s son from Bookham in the Yass-Gundagai region of NSW.

Archie Hyles

“She told me I got my name because she thought I might win it,” he said as his proud mum, artist Stephanie Hyles looked on with father Richard, the subject of his winning entry in the 9-12 age group. The big prize awaits, but little did his mum know her dream would come at least partly true inside a decade.

Archie said he painted his dad because “he’s always happy and he always encourages me in what I do, like motorbike riding and playing rugby”.

“You will go down in history as the first winners,” NSW Art Gallery director Michael Brand told Archie and three young Sydney-based winners – seven-year-old Liam Williamson of Peakhurst, 13-year-old Max Fontaine of Waverley and 17-year-old St George Girls High student Angela Yang.
