Originally from the Vale of Pickering on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in Northern England, Mary trained in printmaking and ceramics at the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland. She continued exploring these techniques in Edinburgh, exhibiting regularly at the Scottish Royal Academy and other galleries in the UK.
In 1994 Mary moved to Sydney where she pursued postgraduate studies in printmaking at the Art College – now the National Art School. She returned to Europe in 1997 where she spent the next 11 years renovating an old French farm house and bringing up her 2 children there. In 2008, she and her family returned to Australia and took up residence in the Yass Valley Shire in Murrumbateman.
“After a long break I am finally starting my art again, and experimenting with new etching techniques that weren’t around 11 years ago. It’s also the first time I have had my own studio space and etching press, so I’m very excited.”
“I’m looking to get more colour into my etchings. I love pattern, decoration and space. Stylised insects, birds and flowers often recur in my work – they lend themselves so well to decorative techniques.”
