8th February

Yass Music Club – Concert 1
The Royal Military College (RMC) Band

The Royal Military College (RMC) Band is the official band for all regal, vice regal, diplomatic and state functions held in the national capital. The RMC Band is also involved in community relations and since its formation in 1954 has played a prominent role in Canberra’s musical life. It raises thousands of dollars each year for charity and always delights our Yass audience. Tap your toes to sizzling big band tunes featured solo voices and featured instrumentalists in a rousing start to our 2014 season of fine music.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shaekspeare

This is an outdoor event held on the lawns of Shaw Vineyard Estate presented by Essential Theatre Production.
All food and beverage is available on site, no BYO food or beverage, and it is possible to book for dinner after the show in Flint in the Vines restaurant (limited availability)

Alaskan String Group

Hailing from Alaska’s capital city of Juneau, the Zahasky family are also recognized internationally as the Alaska String Band. They bring with them the best of Americana music including swing, jazz, bluegrass, pop, dawg, gospel, Hawaiian and Celtic.

Yass Show Poets’ Breakfast

There’ll be a small (one poem each) performance competition for both adults and juniors, plus presentations of the written awards. All welcome to come and perform or listen. Entries in the performance comp close on Monday February 24. Check out the News section for entry forms.

A Brush with Poetry

An afternoon of shared mike and featured performances held last Sunday of every second month — everyone welcome.

A Brush with Poetry Performance will start for the year at the Black Swan Gallery in Binalong. Poets travel from neighbouring regions to read and recite original/traditional/bush/contemporary poetry. There is often a featured poet, and local and visiting musicians sometimes join in.

‘Poetically Speaking’ & ‘Broaden your Palette’

This year the regular Brush with Poetry afternoon open mike session will be complemented by a series of workshops in the morning, starting with ‘Poetically Speaking’ with Robyn Sykes & ‘Broaden your Palette’. with Lizz Murphy. Each workshop is stand alone, so you can come just once or roll up each time. Bookings essential. The RAG Holmes Tribute Concert

Celebrated as one of the most exciting vibes players in the world today, Nick Parnell makes old music new again, injecting energy into a repertoire that might be familiar to some, but definitely inspirational to all. With a spirit of recklessness, Parnell takes one of the newest of classical instruments and gives it a genre-bending makeover. As one of the first musicians to bring the vibraphone to the attention of the classical music world, Parnell’s ongoing ambition is to break down the elitism of classical music and make it available for everyone to enjoy. “Nick Parnell is a complete and utter star. Mary Hick Exhibition

Master printmaker Mary Hick’s artwork will be featured at Robyn Rowe Chocolates gallery throughout June. Mary, who studied printmaking at the Edinburgh School of Art, moved to the Australia some years ago and now calls the Yass Valley home.
Where: The Robyn Rowe Chocolate gallery 1153 Nanima Road, Murrumbateman.

Anneke Saunders Exhibition

Yass Valley artist Anneke Saunders will be exhibiting at the Cork St Café in Gundaroo until the end of June.
The exhibition is called “Who Is Coming To Dinner?” and is about the things that can happen when people have dinner together.

Oddfellows’ presents
The String Contingent in concert

The String Contingent return to Yass to once again wow audiences with their mix of folk stylings, Contemporary and Classical traditions. Violinist Chris Stone, guitarist Graham McLeod and bassist Holly Downes create a joyful, ever-shifting and witty sound as they explore the way their instruments interact.

Yass Music Club – Concert 3
The Maruki Ensemble

This ensemble is the professional power behind the Maruki Community Orchestra and represents a wealth of talent and experience. Anne Stevens (piano) is a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician who has performed most of the major repertoire with a host of noted Australian musicians. John Gould (violin) played with the SSO and many ABC orchestras before moving to London, where he became Principal Viola with the LSO. Rita Woolhouse (cello) graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium after studying with Colleen McMeekan and David Pereira She is an experienced and passionate chamber musician, performing with many groups. Amy Stevens (viola) toured with the Australian Youth Orchestra and is a regular member of the Jeunesses Musicales World Youth Orchestra. This group will perform the Beethoven Triple Concerto in Yass in 2014. This will be a wonderful Sunday afternoon of chamber music.

Yass Music Club – Concert 4
Tim Kain – Guitar Trek

Tim Kain is Head of Guitar at the Australian National University’s School of Music and will bring his world renowned guitar quartet to Yass. This group uses a specially made family of guitars of different sizes and an exciting new repertoire for the medium with original Australian music at its heart. Guitar Trek’s strong popular appeal has led to immense success with four best-selling CD’s available on ABC Classics and regular touring both overseas and in Australia. They will perform music from South America and Spain, pay tribute to the Beatles and more.

Meg Corson, although heavily grounded in jazz, has a singing and performance background that spans most genres of music. Meg toured extensively both nationally and internationally as a founding member of the internationally renowned a cappella group ‘The Idea of North’. Her repertoire is undoubtedly Jazz but her diverse experience always allows her to let the mood guide where her songs go! The gift of a beautiful voice is a great thing, but when complimented with the ability to communicate the heart and soul of a song you have a musical experience that is set apart from the rest. ‘ART @ the TENNIS CLUB’exhibition

The Yass Tennis Club Art Group will be hosting an exhibition of their works on Saturday and Sunday October 25-26.
The group taught by well known local artist John McClung has been working on individual artworks every Monday night for the last 12 months.  All are welcome to attend the free exhibition which includes a Friday night opening (October 24) with drinks and nibbles.  All three days of the weekend will take place at the Yass Tennis Club on Fifield Lane.
Opening night will kick off at 6pm and the  exhibitions on Saturday and Sunday will run from 10am to 4pm.

After the success of last year’s concert, Victorian Jazz Singer Meg Corson is back at Crisp Galleries to delight you yet again with an afternoon of Jazz with a five piece band – colleagues since their days at the ANU Jazz School.  They bring together what is undoubtedly a passionate display of a love for the original traditions of popular jazz, complimented by seasoned musicianship! The afternoon will present popular jazz classics made famous by Billy Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin (her first album was jazz!) as well as some more modern tunes given a different treatment.
